Cold email for hemp and cannabis companies, done right
Most cold email fails on plumbing before the copy gets a chance. We build the sending infrastructure, warm it, build and verify the buyer list, write copy that gets replies, and answer every response. Your main domain stays out of it.

The channel that doesn't need ad approval
A cold email is a message from one person to another. There is no ad review, no restricted category list, and no policy team deciding whether "hemp" is allowed in the subject line. For hemp and cannabis companies selling to other businesses, that makes email the most reliable channel available.
It also happens to be the right channel for B2B. The purchasing lead at a distributor doesn't buy from an Instagram ad. They buy from someone who understood their sourcing problem and wrote a clear note about it.
- 284 replies · 36 opportunities
- from 28,400 cold emails, one campaign into cannabis retail (historical, see results)
- 3 to 4 weeks
- from kickoff to first send
- Under 3%
- bounce rate on every list
Infrastructure: the part nobody sees and everybody skips
Cold email has a physical layer. Get it wrong and the best copy in the world lands in spam. We treat infrastructure as the first deliverable, not a setup step.
Your main domain never sends cold email. We buy separate sending domains that look like yours (for example, a variant of your brand name), point them back to your real site, and send from those. If a domain's reputation ever drops, we swap it. Your invoices, customer emails, and internal mail are never at risk.
- Domains
- three to five per client, purchased and owned on your behalf
- Mailboxes
- two to three per domain, real accounts on major providers
- Authentication
- SPF, DKIM, DMARC on every domain, verified before warm-up
- Redirects
- every sending domain forwards to your primary site
- Send caps
- 30 to 50 emails per mailbox per day, ramped up over weeks, not days
- Rotation
- sends distributed across mailboxes so no single inbox spikes
- Monitoring
- inbox placement tested weekly; blacklist checks daily
Warm-up: two to three weeks that save the whole campaign
A brand-new mailbox that sends 50 cold emails on day one gets flagged. Mail providers watch for it. Warm-up builds a sending history first: the mailbox exchanges real emails with a network of other real mailboxes, gets replies, gets moved out of spam, and slowly earns a reputation. Only then does outreach begin.
We keep warm-up running in the background for the life of the campaign, at a reduced rate, so reputation holds.
What we watch every week
Bounce rate. Kept under 3%. Higher means the list is bad, and it damages the domain.
Spam complaint rate. Kept near zero. One complaint per thousand is the ceiling.
Inbox placement. Tested against major providers. If placement drops, we pause the mailbox and fix it before sending resumes.
Blacklists. Checked daily. Delisted immediately if anything appears.
If a domain gets burned, we replace it at no cost to you. It's our job to keep the plumbing clean.

A cold email to the wrong person is spam no matter how well it's written. A cold email to the right person with the right offer is a sales conversation waiting to start.

How the list gets built
You approve the ICP: segment, company size, role, geography, exclusions.
We pull candidate companies from the sources above.
We find the right contact at each: purchasing, operations, founder, depending on company size.
Every email address is verified. Catch-alls and risky addresses get handled separately or dropped.
You see a sample before we send.
No purchased lists. No scraped lists. A verified list of 500 real buyers beats a spreadsheet of 10,000 guesses.
Copy that reads like a person wrote it, because one did
Short. Specific. One idea per email. Written for the person reading it, not for a template. And compliance-aware by default: no medical claims, no effect claims, no THC language that could get the email flagged or your company a letter.
The reverse lead magnet
The first email doesn't ask for a meeting. It gives the buyer something they can use: a short list, a benchmark, a comparison, a regulatory note. The ask comes in the second or third email, after you've been useful. Reply rates go up because you've earned the reply.
Subject: 14 retailers in [state] carrying [category]
[First name], we put together a short list of 14 retailers in [state] that added [category] products in the last six months. Thought it might be useful for your sales team.
Happy to send it over. No strings.

Sequence structure
- Email 1
the reverse lead magnet (value, no ask)
- Email 2
deliver or follow up, one-line ask
- Email 3
a specific angle for their segment
- Email 4
short check-in
- Email 5
breakup, with the door left open
You approve every sequence before it sends. Edits back inside two business days keep the launch on schedule.
Every reply gets a human, inside one business day
The reply is where the campaign turns into revenue. It's also where automation ruins it. We don't autorespond.
What happens to each reply:
- Interested
a human answers, offers times, sends the calendar link, confirms the meeting, and adds context notes to your calendar event.
- Question
answered directly. If it needs your input, it's flagged to you the same day.
- Not now
tagged and placed in a follow-up cadence at the interval they named, or 60 days.
- Wrong person
we ask for the right one and re-route.
- Not interested / unsubscribe
removed from all sending within one business day. Never contacted again.
- Out of office
parsed for return date and rescheduled.
You see the replies. Every one is logged in the weekly report with its outcome.
Is cold email legal for hemp companies?
Yes. In the United States, cold email to businesses is legal under the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003, and CAN-SPAM does not restrict by industry. A hemp, CBD, or cannabis company sending B2B email follows the same rules as a software company or a packaging supplier.
CAN-SPAM sets requirements for how commercial email is sent, not for what the sender sells. The main requirements are:
Header information (From, To, Reply-To, routing) must be accurate and identify the sender.
The subject line must not be deceptive.
The message must be identifiable as an advertisement, if it is one.
The email must include a valid physical postal address for the sender.
The email must explain how to opt out, and opt-outs must be honored within ten business days.
The sender is responsible for compliance even when a third party sends on their behalf.
Every HempLeads email meets all six. Opt-outs are processed within one business day, not ten.
Two related points. First, CAN-SPAM covers the email itself. It doesn't change any state or federal rule about what hemp or cannabis products you can sell or ship, so your ICP should exclude states where you can't do business. Second, other countries have different rules. Canada's CASL and the EU's GDPR are consent-based and much stricter. We build US campaigns by default and handle international targeting separately.
This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. Talk to your counsel about your specific products and markets.

Cold email questions
Anything else, ask us on the call. We'll answer it straight.
Book a Discovery CallWill cold email get my company's domain blacklisted?
Not if it's done from separate sending domains, which is the only way we do it. Your primary domain never sends cold email. If a sending domain's reputation drops, we replace it.
Can I use my own email account for outreach?
You can, but you shouldn't. A single mailbox can safely send a few dozen cold emails a day. A real campaign needs multiple warmed mailboxes across separate domains. That's what we build.
How many emails do you send per month?
It depends on your ICP size and domain count. A typical setup sends 3,000 to 10,000 emails per month across 6 to 15 mailboxes. Small ICPs get lower volume and more personalization; we'd rather send 500 good emails than 5,000 generic ones.
Is it legal to cold email CBD buyers?
Yes. B2B cold email in the US is governed by CAN-SPAM, which regulates how email is sent, not what industry the sender is in. Accurate headers, honest subject line, physical address, working opt-out. We meet every requirement. Not legal advice.
Do you use AI to write the emails?
We use tools for research and personalization at scale. The sequence is written and edited by a person who knows hemp and cannabis buyers, and you approve it before it sends. An AI-written email that could go to any industry gets any-industry results.
What reply rate should I expect?
Depends on the ICP and the offer, and the range across hemp and cannabis segments is wide enough that a single published number would mislead you. We'll show you what's realistic for your segment on the discovery call, agree a response-rate KPI with you before launch, and put our name on it: miss it in 90 days and we keep working at no additional cost. The free sample campaign shows you real replies before you commit.
What happens to buyers who reply "not now"?
They go into a follow-up cadence at the interval they named, or 60 days by default. A large share of meetings come from the second or third touch, months after the first reply.
Do you also do social outreach?
Yes, as a parallel track. LinkedIn and DM outreach are covered on the social outreach page. Most clients run email first, then add social once the ICP is proven.
See real replies from your buyers before you commit.
Request a one-week sample campaign. We write and send a small batch to your ICP and show you what comes back. Or book 30 minutes and we'll scope the full setup.
